PATTERN EXPERT Coating Inspector: SAE J400

For this test method, samples of painted sheet metal are subjected to a gravel bombardment. Through this, pieces of the various lacquer coatings are chipped off. An analysis of this chipping yields a contribution to a quality assessment for the coating. Frequently, this analysis consists of cumbersome measuring by a specialist.

The test module "SAE J400", developed for "PATTERN EXPERT Coating Inspector", measures the chipping automatically. For this purpose, the relevant regions in the image need to be distinguished from spots and cords on the sample's surface. This is done by intelligent methods based on the technology framework Pattern Expert. The true chipping regions are measured and sorted into magnitude classes as required by the specification. Moreover, they are marked in the image using different colors, which indicate the corresponding magnitude classes. In accordance with the SAE norm, the final assessment code of the sample is calculated from the respective frequencies of chipping regions of the various magnitudes. Additionally, the individual results are presented in a table.
